About Me:

Welcome to “Been an OK Boy,” a newsletter by me, Willa Odefey. As a young recovering addict I have felt firsthand the lack of empathy towards the addiction/recovery community, perpetuated by a general inadequacy in media coverage and (thus) public understanding of addiction as a mental and societal struggle. Now, as a student of journalism, it is my goal to produce and promote empathy by opening a space of vulnerability for the addiction community and those affected by it.

I have expanded my mission to cover mental health as it pertains to the realm of public health. My work will combine my background in policy analysis and intersectional studies with my progress as a student of journalism to bring comprehensive, timely public health coverage as our country’s systems struggle and erode!

A Collaborative:

This newsletter is intended to be an outlet and collaborative effort for anyone in or adjacent to the community.

Why subscribe?

People say journalism is a dying art. I disagree. Journalism provides the transparency and information so desperately needed in today’s America.

It is, however, an increasingly difficult line of work. Journalists and media outlets are targeted around the world every day because of their missions to bring light to truths powerful people want to keep under wraps.

Becoming a paid subscriber would support a young journalist who has a mission to resist these anti-democratic forces, no matter how small these resistance efforts may be.
